Hail Bruising
Hail leaves soft, dark spots where the granules are knocked off. The shingle may look fine from the ground, but the exposed asphalt wears out fast once the sun gets to it.

What's Included
We look at the whole roof, not just the shingles, and give you a written price for the full system before you decide anything.
The Basics
An asphalt shingle roof is made of overlapping shingles with a fiberglass core, coated in asphalt and topped with stone granules. It is the most common roof on Cincinnati homes because it costs less than metal, comes in dozens of colors and can be repaired one section at a time.
The shingles are only the part you see. Underneath is a layer of underlayment, an ice and water barrier along the edges and valleys, metal flashing at every wall and chimney, and vents that let the attic breathe. A shingle roof lasts as long as the weakest of those parts, which is why we price and install them together.
Ohio weather is hard on shingles. Hail, summer storms, humid heat and winters that freeze and thaw dozens of times all wear them down. Not sure which roof material fits your home? Read our comparison of asphalt shingles vs. metal roofing or the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles.

Warning Signs
These are the problems we find most often on asphalt shingle roofs around Greater Cincinnati.
Hail leaves soft, dark spots where the granules are knocked off. The shingle may look fine from the ground, but the exposed asphalt wears out fast once the sun gets to it.
Strong wind breaks the seal between shingles and lifts the edges. A shingle that has been lifted once is easier to lose in the next storm, and a missing one leaves the underlayment exposed.
Shingles shed some granules when they are new. Piles of them in the gutters or at the downspouts on an older roof mean the shingles are wearing thin.
Cincinnati winters freeze and thaw over and over. That cycle, plus summer heat and a poorly vented attic, dries shingles out until the edges curl and the tabs crack.
Dark streaks running down a slope are usually algae. They are mostly cosmetic, but they show up most on shaded slopes that stay damp.
Many shingle roof leaks start where the shingles meet a chimney, wall or valley, not in the open field of the roof. We check every one of those spots.
What We Install
We install Owens Corning shingles in three tiers, and every replacement is installed as a complete Owens Corning roofing system, not just new shingles over the deck.
3-tab style
Flat, thinner shingles with a simple, uniform look. The lowest-priced option.
Most popular
Owens Corning Duration
Thicker, layered shingles with real depth on the roof. This is what most Cincinnati homeowners pick for a full replacement.
Owens Corning Duration FLEX
A more flexible architectural shingle built for better impact performance, a good fit for homeowners worried about hail.
A sticky membrane along the eaves and in valleys, where ice dams and heavy runoff push water uphill.
A water-resistant layer over the rest of the roof deck, under every shingle. How underlayment works.
A row along the edges that seals the first course of shingles down against wind.
Metal at the roof edge that sends water into the gutter instead of behind it.
Balanced attic ventilation, so heat and moisture don't cook the shingles from below. What a ridge vent does.
Thicker shingles that finish the peaks of the roof.
Not every shingle problem needs a new roof. We replace missing and storm-damaged shingles, reseal flashing and swap worn vent boots. If a repair will do the job, we will tell you. See our roof repair services.
