Fascia Board Replacement: When and How

Quick answer

Fascia board replacement means taking off the damaged fascia and putting up new boards along the roof edge. Small rotted spots can sometimes be cut out and patched. If the rot runs along the board, or it won't hold the gutter anymore, replacing it is the better fix.

Repair or replace

Repair makes sense when the damage is in one spot, the rest of the board is solid, and the cause has been fixed. Replace when the rot runs along the board, the boards are warped or split, or the gutter won't stay attached.

What the job looks like

  1. Inspect the roof edge, gutters and rafter tails to find what caused the damage.
  2. Take off the gutters and drip edge where needed.
  3. Cut out the damaged boards.
  4. Check the rafter tails and the edge of the roof deck for hidden rot.
  5. Install the new fascia (wood, aluminum-wrapped, PVC or composite).
  6. Put the drip edge back or replace it, then rehang the gutters.
  7. Prime and paint where it's needed.

What changes the price

Linear feet, material, how many stories, how far the rot went into the rafter tails and decking, and whether the gutters have to come off and be rehung. We can quote it after an inspection.

Since the gutters usually come off anyway, it's a good time to think about replacing any that are worn out.

FAQ

Fascia Board Replacement: common questions

Can fascia be replaced without replacing the roof?

Yes. Fascia gets replaced on its own all the time.

Should I fix the fascia before the gutters?

Yes. Gutters need solid wood to hang on.

How long does it take?

A typical house is usually a short job, but it depends on how much is damaged and the weather.

  • Fascia Board

A fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the edge of your roof. It caps the ends of the rafters, gives your gutters something solid to attach to, and finishes the roof edge so water and animals stay out.

  • Rotted Fascia

Rotted fascia is wood fascia that has broken down after water has been reaching it for a long time. It feels soft and crumbles or flakes when you poke it. The board is a symptom. The real problem is usually a gutter overflow, an ice dam or a leak at the roof edge.

  • Gutter Apron

A gutter apron is a strip of metal flashing along the roof edge that guides water off the shingles and into the gutter, so it doesn't run down behind it onto the fascia. It's a type of drip edge with a longer lip that reaches out over the gutter.

  • Drip Edge

Drip edge is a strip of L-shaped metal flashing along the edges of a roof. It sends water off the shingles and into the gutter, and keeps it from soaking the roof deck and fascia. It's a cheap part that protects wood that rots easily.

  • Soffit vs Fascia

Fascia is the board along the edge of your roof, and your gutters hang on it. Soffit is the panel you see when you look up under the overhang, between the fascia and the wall. Fascia finishes the roof edge. Soffit closes in the underside and usually lets the attic breathe.
